How to Use a Cock Ring Safely

A cock ring is a band worn at the base of the penis, or around the penis and testicles, to hold blood in and make erections feel firmer for some people. They are simple to use, and a few rules keep them comfortable.

Start with a stretchy ring

Soft silicone or other stretchy rings are the easiest to put on and take off. Avoid rigid metal rings for your first try, since they cannot stretch if swelling occurs. Learn more in our guide to cock ring sizes and materials.

How to put one on

  1. Put the ring on before you are fully erect, which makes it much easier.
  2. Use a generous amount of water-based lube on the ring and on yourself.
  3. Feed the testicles through one at a time, then the shaft, working the ring down to the base.

How tight should it feel?

Snug, not painful. If you feel numbness, tingling, a change in colour or coldness, take it off straight away. A ring that is too small is the most common mistake.

How long can you wear it?

Keep it short. Many guides suggest no more than about 20 to 30 minutes, and you should never sleep in one. If there is any doubt, remove it sooner.

How to take it off

Wait for the erection to ease, add more lube, and slide it off gently. A stretchy ring can be cut in an emergency, and a ring you cannot remove is a reason to get medical help rather than keep trying.

Which type?

  • Single spinner ring: a ring with a bead or spinner for extra sensation, see single spinner rings.
  • Ring packs: several sizes in one pack, so you can find the right fit, see spinner ring packs.
  • Jumbo rings: larger and stretchier, see jumbo rings.

Browse every ring, and keep them clean with how to clean your toys.
