How to Choose a First Butt Plug

How to Choose a First Butt Plug: the items covered

A first butt plug does not need to be big or complicated. It needs to be the right size, the right shape and used with patience.

1. A flared base is essential

Anything that goes in the rectum needs a base wider than the toy, so it cannot slip inside. Every plug from our plugs and training sets range has a base designed for this.

2. Start small

Pick a small, tapered plug first. A graduated training set, like the B-Vibe Butties sets or the glass dilator sets, lets you move up in size at your own speed instead of buying one plug after another.

3. Pick the right material

Silicone is the usual first choice: smooth, flexible and easy to clean. Glass and stainless steel are rigid and also easy to clean. See body-safe materials explained.

4. Plenty of lube

Use more than you think you need and reapply. With silicone plugs, use water-based lube, never silicone lube. See how to choose lube. Our JO anal lubes are made for this use.

5. Relax and go slowly

Take a warm shower first, breathe slowly and insert the tip gently. Pause until you feel your body relax, then continue. Never force it, and stop if it hurts.

6. Wear time

For a first try, keep it short, a few minutes is plenty. Build up gradually, and do not sleep with a plug in.

7. Clean it afterwards

Wash the plug with warm water and mild soap or a toy cleaner, then dry it fully. See how to clean your toys.
